Leeds Law School at Leeds Metropolitan University offers a full range of legal education and training, providing a friendly and supportive teaching environment for over 1,000 students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 93 per cent of undergraduate students are in employment or undertaking further study within six months of graduating.
The reputation of Leeds Law School is shown in the fact that our LLB Law attracts the highest application levels of any course at Leeds Metropolitan University.
We offer a full range of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional law courses, as well as having a flourishing Law Research Unit. Our postgraduate law courses include the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and the conversion course, the Postgraduate Diploma in Law.
Leeds Law School, whose clients include the Crown Prosecution Service and HM Revenue and Customs, has excellent relations with the legal profession, with many practising lawyers in Leeds acting as mentors to law students. This ensures that there is a strong vocational focus and that the student experience is refreshed through engaging with professional partners. Within the School, there is a fully established research community in the Law Research Unit. The Leeds Law School provision was praised by the Law Society and Quality Assurance Agency in 2004.
Learning in the heart of the city
In September 2005, Leeds Law School moved into a state of the art learning facility at Cloth Hall Court in the heart of Leeds’ legal quarter. Cloth Hall Court has excellent facilities including modern lecture theatres, a mock court room and a dedicated resource room for postgraduate students. Cloth Hall Court’s facilities are backed up by a wide range of educational, sporting and recreational services at the Leeds Metropolitan City Campus.
Leeds Law School students often take part in mooting competitions, using the Mock Court Room at Cloth Hall Court. Our Student Law Society is one of the most active groups at Leeds Metropolitan, with over 500 members. Many Law Society members take part in the Streetlaw project, a student-led initiative which delivers interactive workshops in schools on issues such as anti-social behaviour legislation and young people’s rights and responsibilities.
Professional Relevance
Our staff have significant professional expertise from their experience of working as solicitors or barristers, providing students with a learning experience that is academically demanding, but relevant to the legal world.
Leeds has a thriving legal community and is the largest legal centre outside London. Being based in the heart of the city’s legal district, Leeds Law School encourages and supports students to improve their employment prospects by building links with the legal community.
Our Mentoring Scheme encourages postgraduate law students to link with a professional mentor. At the heart of the scheme is engaging and building contacts with legal professionals, allowing you to gain greater awareness of what qualities solicitors are looking for when they are recruiting trainees. We have over 100 professional mentors from all areas of legal practice.
