International
Through Leeds Legal, Leeds
lawyers are leading the way in forging international business links for the
city. In conjunction with the campaign’s
main sponsor, UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) - the British government’s
international trading organisation - Leeds Legal has undertaken an ambitious
international programme, including facilitating delegation visits to and from,
Europe, Asia and the Americas.
In order to give Leeds
lawyers the opportunity to increase their business contacts overseas, and to
attract new business to the city, Leeds Legal carries out regular international
delegation visits to all corners of the business globe.
Many of the delegation visits arranged by
Leeds Legal have resulted in reciprocal inward visits from overseas business
cities to Leeds, allowing them to experience
the city, and its legal services for themselves.
With assistance from campaign sponsors
Jet2.com and Hilton Leeds City
hotel, over 60 overseas delegates have been welcomed to Leeds

International
delegation programme
Working alongside national and regional
Chambers of Commerce, law societies, British embassies and consulates, Leeds
Legal has developed relationships with leading business cities across Europe, Asia
and the Americas,
through their international delegation programme.
Europe
Belgium – Brussels
Brussels is at the heart of European politics and business, this was the
first European destination for the Leeds Legal campaign. Soon after the launch in April 2006, Leeds
Legal led a delegation of lawyers to Brussels to
host a unique event for Brussels-based businesses to learn about doing business
in Leeds and the Yorkshire region.
Germany – Dusseldorf
As Europe’s national largest economy, Germany
offers many business opportunities for lawyers.
A 15-strong delegation visited the capital of the North Rhine-Westphalia
region, Dusseldorf in autumn 2006, with a return
delegation visit welcomed to Leeds in spring
2007. Lawyers from both cities
benefitted by establishing networks, contacts and opportunities, as part of the
visit facilitated by Leeds Legal, UKTI and the British Chamber of Commerce in
Germany
Italy – Milan
In partnership with UKTI and the British
Chamber of Commerce for Italy,
Leeds Legal led a delegation of Leeds-based lawyers to Milan,
as part of a three-day exploratory visit to Italy’s financial and business
capital. Invited guests received a
series of presentations about doing business in Leeds and the Yorkshire
region, and how the Leeds Legal services can assist in growing a business and
developing international trade links.
In February 2008, a delegation of eight
Milanese lawyers and business leaders took part in a return delegation visit to
Leeds. As part of the two-day visit,
delegates met with a number of Leeds law firms
as well as representatives from the Leeds Chamber of Commerce and Leeds City
Council. A further visit to Milan is due to take place in autumn 2008, as part of a
week-long business showcasing event for Leeds
in the city, which is guaranteed to have a strong presence from Leeds Legal.
Asia
China – Hong
Kong and Hangzhou
After an exploratory visit to Hong Kong in March 2007, and welcoming a business
delegation a few months later, Leeds Legal led a group of 10 lawyers back to
the province in November 2007. As part
of a week-long visit to both Hong Kong and Hangzhou
– Leeds’ twin city - the delegation met with local law firms, the regional law
societies and businesses keen to invest in the UK.
In association with the China Britain
Business Council and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the delegation
strengthened their connections with regional lawyers, businesses in addition to
meeting with government ministers to discuss regeneration and public private
finance initiatives.
